No end date for TCU’s quarterback competition
Just as soon as he got comfortable, TCU head coach Gary Patterson talked about the one question on most fans’ minds — quarterback.
While Kenny Hill is believed to be the frontrunner, Patterson emphasized that Foster Sawyer will compete with Hill for the job. The coach compared the competition to that one between Matt Joeckel and Trevone Boykin two years ago.
“We will judge our quarterbacks like we always have,” he said, “whoever makes the offense better and who can lead the team and make less mistakes. I think it’s going to be healthy one.”
He said he didn’t know how quickly a starter would be named, adding that he wants to see the two play in scrimmages first. The coach said he hopes they both perform well because the team will benefit greatly in the long run.
Fans will see immediately how productive they’ve been, Patterson said, noting they have changed their bodies in ways that will help each perform at peak levels.
Patterson said he thought the Horned Frogs — the entire team — had a great spring and great summer. He said the quarterbacks improved.
And though Boykin is gone, so is receiver Josh Doctson. But Patterson noted that even with those veterans gone, so many players contributed last year who are returning in 2016. Those same players, he added, used their spring and summer very productively. That’s why he was so optimistic headed into the season.
“I really like the way this team has approached the summer time, and sometimes you get a feel for your team,” he said.
The Horned Frogs experienced injuries last year on the defensive side that forced other players into action. He believes that will help as they continue to get ready for 2016.
“They’re still in a situation where they want to become great,” he said. “I don’t think they know who they are. I think that helps you sometimes as long as there is a competence level. … We had to play a lot of younger players, and that means they’re not as strong as they need to be so you had a spring and a summer to get stronger, both the offensive line and the wide receiver positions.”
